You might say “Zorin OS is like Windows” or “Vim improves workflow once you learn it”

That’s not good enough.

If it isn’t clean enough, simple enough, and reliable enough for someone to sit down like at a Win10 machine, iPhone or any other device and fulfill their use cases in a minimum of clicks and decision points, it isn’t good enough.

If FOSS wants to take over the world they have to be noticeably better than those that already have. Ideology isn’t a good enough pitch: Superiority is.

Technology Rant

Amazing the difference a login process makes.

The 'delight' that is my nvidia graphics card consistently requires me to login to update update driver. Yet I frequently can't login.

In consequence, and for what little it is worse, I doubt I will ever buy a nvidia product again as the process is so infuriating!

WTF ... Mozilla had always running JavaScript inside PDFs disabled by default.

But now with FF 88 this option is ENABLED by default. Which means, if a PDF file contains JS it will run without any user interaction. What can possibly go wrong?

To disable this:

about:config
pdfjs.enableScripting --> false

# FF 78.10 ESR doesn't include this option and still blocks JS in PDFs by default. Just tested.

Going more private has a lot of old school attitude.

Don't use credit cards, use cash (of course no Apple Pay etc.). Don't use google maps, learn where you need to go and figure it out like you did a decade ago. Don't listen to streaming music, listen to music you downloaded.

What would you do if there was no big tech companies to hold your hand? Will you be lost?

This project, PM'd by the rockstar that is @epilepticrabbit was a proper 10-week rollercoaster. Glad to have been part of it, but also pleased to get my Tues/Thurs afternoons back!

Static sites are great, but they're not for everyone. If you're using them because WordPress is too heavy here's proof that you can fix your WordPress theme. This is from my own WP site with a homepage that weighs a whopping 25kb (compressed). Theme at github.com/ChrisWiegman/chrisw

If you care about privacy on the web, even if you don't use WordPress, I highly suggest supporting this effort to disable FLoC by default in WP Core and doing so as a security update. With 40% of the web this is sorely needed. make.wordpress.org/core/2021/0

I learn today that a Tyrannosaurus is chronologically closer to an iPhone than it is to a Stegosaurus.

Well, I seem to have it working. 🙂

Required editing the NGINX and adding add_header Permissions-Policy interest-cohort=(); to a few locations. But a check on security headers shows its working. 🤓
